Imposter Syndrome

What is Imposter syndrome?

Impostor Syndrome is when you believe or perceive that your abilities are not as good as those of your contemporaries. Its symptoms often overlap those associated with anxiety.

Impostor syndrome causes you to feel as if you are faking your personality/behaviour in front of other individuals. It is prevalent in non-indigenous communities as many people within these communities are conditioned to feel they don’t belong. This belief is internalised, to such a degree, that it forms a debilitating loop in our minds.

Alongside this, additional challenges may arise regarding sexuality, gender, and being female ( the original diagnoses for high-achieving women).

What Imposter Syndrome can look like

  • Self-doubt
  • Feeling like a fraud
  • Inability to realistically asses your abilities
  • Seeing your success as a factor disconnected from your abilities.
  • Fear of being found out
  • Berating your own performance
  • Overachieving to prove "worthiness"
  • Sabotaging success out of fear.
